Lifestyle medicine is an evidence-based approach to using positive health behaviors to address the root cause of many chronic diseases. The AFLAME coaching program will help you incorporate the six pillars of lifestyle medicine, while also nurturing your mind and spirit with positive psychology interventions & Catholic spiritual practices. By integrating these three disciplines, you can truly flourish in mind, body, and spirit.
The coaching process provides guidance, support, and accountability as you make these behaviors part of your everyday life.
Multiple positive psychology interventions have been shown to increase wellbeing and promote positive health behaviors. Through health coaching, you'll be guided to learn more about your character strengths, as well as how to increase mindful awareness, gratitude, engagement and meaning.
Countless studies have shown that adopting six key behaviors can reduce the risk of chronic disease. These lifestyle medicine behaviors include plant-predominant eating, regular exercise, getting restorative sleep, positive stress management, nurturing relationships, and avoiding smoking and alcohol.
Research indicates greater health and wellbeing among those who actively participate in a religious community. You'll explore ways to increase engagement in the practice of your faith, including the sacraments and a consistent routine with prayer, scripture and service.
In the Old Testament, the prophet Daniel chose to abstain from the rich foods of the king's table, which was fruitful for both his spiritual growth and his bodily health. The Daniel Fast is a partial fast that focuses on spiritual development, while avoiding foods and drink that don't truly nourish our body. Like Daniel, you'll learn to eat real plant foods, while eliminating processed foods, animal products, caffeine and alcohol. The first few weeks of Lent help you to reduce harmful foods, while slowly increasing healthful foods. In the days prior to Easter, participants can choose to follow a 10-day or 21-day Daniel Fast, which allows unlimited whole plant foods and water, but avoids foods that harm our health.
In this mini-course, you will learn how the Holy Trinity can provide a framework for addressing your health. This will allow you to orient your health behaviors toward your ultimate telos: God and the service of his kingdom. Drawing from positive psychology, lifestyle medicine and research on religion in health, you'll be introduced to these 3 areas that will help you thrive in health of mind, body and spirit.
